Kyoufu no Bio Ningen Saishuu Kyoushi

Imagine if you will that the anime Great Teacher Onizuka had an older, less funny, and uninteresting older brother. That is essentially what you have with Ultimate Teacher. If it hadn’t actually come a number of years earlier, I would say this is a rip-off of GTO.

If you have seen the aforementioned GTO, then the story is going to feel pretty familiar to you, though with a few strange differences. We start with some lab experiment gone wrong then are suddenly thrust three years into the future. Don’t expect that part to make much sense until the end. Our "hero", ... Ganpachi enters a high school that is basically a war zone, with various gangs and punk kids and graves to teachers before. This is all lead by the unlikely gang leader Himeko. There is a lot of physical comedy and some parody and quite a bit of action. The humor is juvenile to put it nicely but it is funny at times (rarely). The story does stick to basics for the most part and it does manage to flesh out the important characters enough to make sense.

The biggest problem with this show is the characters. Normally for a show to be enjoyable you have to have someone in the cast to cheer for. Maybe I sound like a bit of a prude.. well I am a former teacher after all (middle school yuck), but I for one found nothing redeeming about any of the students. Himeko is supposed to be the hero, I suppose, but she’s well a punk. I’m supposed to feel bad for her as Ganpachi humiliates her but I don’t. Considering what she has done to the staff of the school and the state the school is in I find it impossible to see what is so good about her. She has super strength, well unless someone sees her panties (Huh?). Luckily she has her blue lucky kitty which saves herself from this weakness. Stay with me, I don’t think this is supposed to make sense.

Teenagers running amok and defeating all their authority figures I suppose is a dream of those this age and definitely the target audience of this show but I fail to see what life lesson this is supposed to teach. If you though the "authority figure" Ganpachi was going to be like Onizuka then your proven wrong pretty quickly. He becomes probably even more unlikable and tyrannical than even the students. Normally I can think of something positive worth mentioning but in this case I can’t. Worst cast ever.

The animation and music/acting don’t do anything to distinguish themselves either. I give them fair marks as none of them are horrible, and the visuals are not bad for a show from 1988. There is very little music to speak of and the sound effects sound pretty corny but it’s nothing that’s going to make your cringe.

I suppose Ultimate Teacher has some decent action scenes, though I got very little enjoyment out of it. If you really like girls in kitty panties fighting and absolutely must see every anime with them, then by all means knock yourself out. Fortunately not many of you have had the misfortune of seeing this yet, thus I direct this review to you as a public to not make the same mistake as me.

Imagine that Onizuka had an older brother who was part genetically modified warrior-part asshole, and that when he suplexed his female students, they suplexed him back. And there's magic. And henshin hero fights.
And awesome. And stuff. Honestly, I don't remember too many details about this show, but I remember that I laughed quite a few times, and wished it had a proper sequel.
I hope that counts for something.

Bio Ningen delivers everything you expect form a good 80s'-era OVA: good animation, fight scenes, schoolgirl fanservice, an ignorable plot (this is always for the best) weird characters, and poofy hair. However, it doesn't have any stupidly-detailed robots, ... but that doesn't matter in the long run. Bio Ningen doesn't play any of it straight-it's a broad satire of the media in the day, from henshin shows to anime, manga, and even western movies.

...And that's about it. Worth a watch.

During the 1980s (and 90s), there wasn't really any quality control when it came to anime that was brought over to the U.S. So, for every really good OVA/anime that was brought over to the states (i.e., FOTNS, Megazone 23, Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket), there was at least one anime that was pure ultraviolent schlock (i.e., Cybernetics Guardian, MD Geist, Violence Jack). However, Ultimate Teacher stands out among all the OVAs that were brought over to the states - mainly because instead of being another ultraviolent schlock title, it's a comedy OVA in the same vein as Excel Saga.

Story: 6/10
The story ... is...really confusing. It starts off with a test subject escaping from an underground lab that holds government experiments. However, instead of terrorizing the neighborhood like in a stereotypical horror anime with this premise, the test subject, a man named Ganpachi who had his DNA spliced with that of a cockroach, decides to become a teacher - but not just any teacher; THE Ultimate Teacher. He arrives at a run down school that has been overrun by a school gang, and the leader of the gang is a girl named Hinako (no relation to the girl from those OVAs) he met while on his way to the school. He tasks himself to restoring order at the school - in any way possible, and that means defeating Hinako - whose strength comes from the type of panties she wears (despite what this might imply, there actually isn't a lot of fanservice in this show - at least when you compare it to, oh say, Gunbuster). And eventually, one of the people who is part of the lab that Ganpachi escaped from tracks Ganpachi down - and then the plot becomes too complex for me to explain.

Art: 3/10
The art here has not aged well, but even if I was reviewing this at the time it came out, I wouldn't give it a very high score, mainly because the animation isn't very good even for the time it came out. There aren't any animation errors per say, but the art style hasn't aged well.

Sound: 7/10
Nothing really drags it down. The dub isn't terrible (at least the U.S. dub, anyway - there's a U.K dub, but I can't comment on that one, since I haven't seen it), but it's not a stand out dub, either.

Character: 7/10
Ganpachi is a character that you really have to see in order to understand him. It's pretty much impossible to describe his personality - all I'll say is that it is kind of what you would expect if a human had a cockroach's personality. As for Hinako, she's pretty much a tomboy, except she gets her strength from her Lucky Kitty underwear - in fact, taking it away from her (or revealing it) is pretty much her kryptonite.

Enjoyment: 9/10
It's just so hard to describe. It's easier if you just watch it to understand it.

Overall: 8/10
It's pretty hard to track down a copy (I believe it's currently unlicensed), but you can find it on Youtube (both the U.S. and U.K. dubs) if you want to watch it.

RIYL: Excel Saga, FLCL, Gintama

Ok, so if there is one tip I'd suggest before you watch this and you are looking for a dubbed version..

Find the UK dub.

It's far, far superior in terms of comedic content than the US dub and I think captures the spirit of what this silly but fun OVA is all about.

There's no real point in trying to give a serious review for this film, the plot is basic and makes just about as much sense as it needs to. The characters are fleshed out to about the minimum they need to be apart from Ganpachi and Hinako. The art is obviously dated but ... not so terrible as to be unwatchable decades later.

This is a fun way to lose 50 or so minutes, it's no classic but it's full of fun and doesn't ever take itself seriously but doesn't fall into the usual tropes of a comedy anime with lots of cuts to cute characters explaining things.

Mainly I just want to write down somewhere that I have remembered the secret of the ultimate teacher(!) so that I don't soon forget it. You too can learn the secret if you note carefully the reactions of those you show it to. Of course if I feel I need to forget it again, I shall erase this review. That's all for today, kids.

Oh wow. This anime caught me by surprise.

There are good animes, there are bad animes, there are mediocre animes, and then there's this.

I can only classify this as "insane".

Basically, in this anime there's a typical 1980's anime cool looking high-school girl fighting some weirdo that claimed to be "best teacher in the world". Aside from him saying to be "the best teacher", there are no similarities with great teacher onizuka whatsoever.

What sets the anime apart is that it is absolutely unpredictable and follows no logic. It is impossible to tell what happens next at any moment. You can forget about story, characters or anything, it ... is a string of over the top scenes (mostly fighting scenes) in ridiculous situations with ridiculously acting characters. Because of this complete unpredictability, it is worth a watch.

With all that in mind...
The story is mostly irrelevant, characters don't really develop (they don't really have time for that), and voice acting on many characters is not very good. Background music is standard 1980s electronic(?)-something and is forgettable.

Art isn't bad, and animation is decent.

Bottome line is: take a look at this if you want to be surprised and want to have "what the heck did I just see?" reaction afterwards. If you want deep believable characters, complex storylines, etc, this is not the right kind of show.

Considering the title, some poor souls might mistakenly step into this anime expecting a facsimile of GTO, or at least something similar. It isn't, and never attempts to be a moderately sophisticated, thoughtfully plotted dramady of Japanese school life portraying well-developed relationships between teacher and students. Far from it.

What it is, however, is a crass, loud, and unexpectedly delightful gut buster of a monkey dance. In its run time just shy of an hour, Ultimate Teacher whips up several mismatched genres with a bucket-load of bold gags into a potent concoction that, like saukraut or durian, may not be for everyone, or even most people ... today. Remember, this was the '80s, a time when political correctness was a low priority in entertainment. If you are the faint of heart, keep your distance.

However, if you can look past the rough and ready exterior and general disregard to please, there's a lot of fun to be had here. Unlike other, more typical '80s anime, you'll think you know what's coming, but you don't. Durex-thin character tropes exist to be deconstructed, embarrassed, and contorted. Cliches are earnestly presented, only to be shattered ruthlessly in the scene immediately following. Sight-gags are found in every other shot to tickle your funny bone. Music is sparse, but it always kicks in at just the right moment. The story, while textbook, moves forward at breathless velocity thanks to the maniacal comedy which drives it. Beneath its veneer of stupidity, Ultimate Teacher sharply and continuously subverts expectations. Admittedly, the tale pushes the boundaries of what's acceptable to it's presumably sane viewer, walking across a high wire of visual and situational insanity in glee over a boiling sea of perverse bad taste. It does a surprisingly stable job of maintaining balance without falling in, staying coherent in part thanks to its headstrong heroine, but it inevitably gets splashed now and again. Still, it's no mere feat, and this bizarre OVA should be applauded for its daring.

Ultimate Teacher is a lot of things, but do yourself a favor and don't take it seriously... at all. Keep an open mind, release your genre notions, and you might just reach the ending credits with a tear in your eyes, a grin on your face, and a hand clutching your side.

Let's be clear from the start that this OVA is trashy. It is totally shit. But it never pretends to be anything other than a joke, and the way it handles itself makes it nothing less than hilariously good!

Story 7/10

I had to artificially inflate the score for the story to justify the 7.5/10 overall; but if we consider the story to be the general content then I think that is okay.

I don't know where my love for this anime comes from, exactly. I bought it when it came out in the UK, in about 1995/6, and nearly cried with joy when I managed to get ... hold of a new copy recently.

The story is nothing short of lightweight. The Ultimate Teacher is actually a lab experiment to cross a cockroach with a man for some reason. The result is a badass bulky bastard who fears nothing and will eat anything. He applies for and gets a job as a teacher in a shockingly bad school (makes the one I work at look like a creche).

But has the Ultimate Teacher bitten off more than he can chew with the velvet-pussy panties wearing, quietly intelligent head of the class? Well, yes, obviously.

Actually the velvet-pussy panties line only applies to the american dub (which is abnormally funny). The Japanese go for the much less exciting lucky kitty gym shorts. Imagine my disappointment.

Anyway that is it. That's the story. It's fleshed out slightly with flashbacks and the arrival of the scientist who created the lead (himself crossed with a spider - web comes out of his arse), and a couple of embarrassing moments for the lead girl when her panties are revealed. But if the writers tried to do anything else it would be too cluttered. If they tried to make it any more intelligent it would be retarded. And if they changed it in any way it just wouldn't be the awesome feat of animated tomfoolery that it is!

Animation 7/10

Well, it looks shit but it's pretty standard from that period of anime. The designs are solid and a slew of background characters keep things interesting (especially in the dub).

Sound 6/10

Again, the American dub is really, really funny (many recognisable voices from early 90s anime, too). The music, however, is bloody terrible. Is there anything else to say?

Characters 7.5/10

The characters are half the story. There are loads of them, and they all have very individual designs and personalities. They carry out the "wacky" humour with cool charm, and look completely at home in their universe. The back story for the velvet-pussy panties is downright touching - she wanted to fight the boys but she kept flashing her all too feminine knickers!

Overall 7.5/10

As I said, I don't know why I love this so much, or why the humour hits me just right, but this is one of my favourite animes (or at least drunk animes).

Sure, it isn't perfect. Some of the random humour is just that - not calculatedly funny, just "uh... let's make this happen, I guess that would be kind of zany" - all the skeletons falling out of the walls near the beginning for instance; was there a reason for that?

Also, perhaps the last 10-15 minutes needs tightening up a little.

But apart from those small problems this is a must see. Don't expect anything at all intelligent, or any kind of message (except that using huge boxes of matches makes you look cool) and you won't be disappointed. I am very glad I have got this anime again.

Pure comedy and a smooth flow from start to end. I felt like this was a well made ova movie. The art was really good for 80's standards, loved the music,fighting scenes, and characters.
The story is kind of interesting and kept me on the edge of my chair.
It's really corny though, so if you are a really serious type of person then maybe this isn't for you.
However, if you enjoy a good laugh then give this a shot. I didn't think I would laugh this hard while watching it honestly. I would give it a 10/10 score just based on how much laughter ... I got out of this, but I still wanted more after the movie. I wish they made this into an anime series or had a lot of movies. I want to say that this anime ova movie is pretty unique overall and worth a watch.
And I'm sure you will feel for the girl in this...feel her embarrassment and want to be on her side.
Even though I personally cheered for the "evil" protagonist...speaking of which, it's really interesting how they portrayed him. I rarely come across a character like that. The other reviewers mentioned GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) and I agree that this character is also like the protagonist from that, but this one is even more of a troll. Maybe if Onizuka had super powers he would troll more, but anyhow, just check it out. ^^

What the hell did I just watch. This show is so random but entertaining. Theres not really much to review here since its one of the most bizarre animes I've watched but I can try my best here.

I'll start off with the characters. Hinako basically a regular girl but has a an interesting touch. She seems a little typical unless shes trying to kick Ganpachi's ass. Theres not much to talk about here about her except that she has a pretty funny past about panties. Ganpachi is hilarious villain. Like imagine Miss Trunchbell from Matilda got fused with a cockroach. That's Ganpachi in a ... nutshell. The other characters don't really have much to talk about except that the fact that the ones who try to defend Hinako are also pretty funny. Like the convenient store scene was absolutely hilarious.

Sound is typical 80s style fight music. Appropriate but forgettable.

The art is pretty bad compared to most anime of the 80s but that can be excusable for how crazy this anime is.

Story, what story, oh the really crazy bizarre story that doesn't really have much explaining as to why this is all happening. Yeah. If you're looking for story this is not for you.

I really enjoyed this OVA cause it was absolutely hilarious. Like if you want an anime to burn some time or get a good laugh out of. If you like random but actually funny animes give this a try. Its only 50 minutes.

Kyoufu no Bio Ningen Saishuu Kyoushi, also known as Ultimate Teacher, is arguably one of the most outrageously absurd OVAs ever created. The OVA heavily relies on juvenile slapstick humor, which may or may not be appreciated by modern audiences. Nevertheless, the action scenes are well-animated, and the close-up shots of characters' faces are visually pleasing. While it lacks depth and thought-provoking themes, Ultimate Teacher manages to hit all the right comedic notes, providing an entertaining and exhilarating viewing experience. If you're a fan of classic animation and enjoy a good laugh, then Kyoufu no Bio Ningen Saishuu Kyoushi is definitely worth checking out.
