Interest Stacks  Real robots are a subgenre of the mecha genre, in which the mechas are depicted as realistic warmachines as opposed to the superheroistic depiction of the super robot subgenre. It was started in 1979 by Mobile Suit Gundam.   Series I hope will get added to future super robot wars games.   Very few stories can craft a setting that leaves a memorable impression, in fantasy fiction creators tend to fall back on safe and familiar settings which to me is always a missed opportunity in a story. These are anime that go above and beyond to envision and breathe life into unique and inspired worlds. A significant artistic effort is put into the locations, technology, vehicles, clothing, props, and architecture of these anime and have been masterfully crafted to facilitate these stories.   Featuring little to no dialogue and/or characters and the experience is carried by the music and/or visual atmosphere.   This is a part of a series of stacks that are about artistic tendencies in anime (and that border the fine line between sophisticated and pretentious).     This interest stack contains mostly obscure OVAs from the 80s/90s (but there are some newer and/or more famous ones as well) that fall into the "so bad it's good" category. These anime are REALLY bad but they still can provide a good laugh with your friends while watching some of the most crappy/WTF/cringe/weird/poorly written/poorly animated/poorly drawn anime. Some of these are questionable, like Suisei no Gargantia can be argued to be fully sci-fi, but there is a feel to it that makes me include it, along with organic and archaic elements that are woven together in a way that makes this appear more fantastical than your average sci-fi. Similarly, Gankutsuou is sci-fi with advanced technology, but it's futuristic imagery is conceptualized to cohere with the elegant 19th century setting of Dumas' novel. I'm also avoiding the inclusion of more than one entry per series, so if season 1 is on here, then season 2 likely fits just as much.  A comprehensive list of every real robot anime universe.   |
