Ai Doll is not for everyone. It has little orphan girls being tortured and raped in order to become cute and obedient nymphos. Most otakus would find it repulsive, even for hentai standards. As for the rest of us S&M freaks, we’ll love it!

ART SECTION: 7/10 [The artwork outshines the porn]
It’s not the character designs you will like in this series. It’s the 18th century European setting that gives a big plus on the atmosphere and boosts the story. I doubt a modern day setting would give off such a sensation. But besides the background decoration, the foreground graphics are nothing special and I can think nothing to write about them.

SOUND SECTION: 7/10
Music themes were uninteresting, as they usually are in hentai. Voice acting was above average, thanks to the characters’ interesting personalities. They colored their presence nicely.

STORY SECTION: 9/10 [Oliver Twist has nothing on this]
A story for a hentai is a good boost for all the sex and torture we get to watch. Most hentai series lack a story because they last for only one or two episodes and simply have no time to waste on story telling and character development. In fact, many viewers came to loath the idea of a story in a hentai, since all they expect to watch is brainless sex. But not THIS hentai! It has a lot of drama and story development that if you take all the nasty parts out, it can stand as a good drama series.

The story is basically a sick version of Candy Candy. And as I mentioned before, it is not for everyone.
In the story, many catholic churches/orphanages torture and rape little orphan girls (for whom no one is going to care about) in secrecy, in order to turn them into cute and obedient nymphos for the rich and famous of the 18th century Europe. The main protagonist is such a girl and most of the time, we get to see her being violated in various physical and mental ways. She has a shy girl with glasses (a fetish!) as her only friend and occasionally they have lesbian sex as the only true pleasure they can choose to have in their miserable lives. She falls in love with a local aristocrat boy (her Prince In Shining Armor; the dreamy male all romances have) but is soon adopted by her uncle and gets separated by him by force.
Unfortunately, her uncle is a sadist who had the hots for his sister. Since she died, he decided to lash out all his bitterness on her daughter. The rest of the story goes, as she is trained/tortured to be the ultimate sex toy. She tries to escape many times with the help of good-hearted people but only ends up getting punished and seeing her helpers die in horrible ways.
She gets to reunite with her friend and prince and even smoothes the cold heart of her uncle (through sex of course) but then the story ends and we get only to imagine how the plot went on.

It’s a nose-wiping story but ends suddenly and gives no conclusion. But, since we practically never get to have a good story in a hentai, a score of 9 is well received, despite its non-existent ending.

CHARACTER SECTION: 8/10 [I love you, so I screw you.]
A hentai with character development is as hard to find as a needle in a haystack. So, this is a case where typical dramatic characters seem more important than they would be in other genres.

We have a little good-hearted girl who unwillingly becomes a sex slave but NEVER NEGLECTS HER GOODNESS. How often do we get to see that in hentai? She matures as she accepts her role as a nympho but keeps trying to be with the ones she cares about.
We have her twisted uncle who has a grudge with her long-dead mother. He is originally a heartless sick bastard but matures towards the end as he only looks for the love he never got from his sister.

The rest of the crew don’t really mature but, non-the-less, they boost the personality of the two aforementioned characters. The story wouldn’t really be so good without them.

VALUE SECTION: 7/10 [If you liked it, keep it to yourselves… It is worthy!]
It’s not for everyone. You can’t talk about it to normal people; much less admit you liked it. It is a rare jewel but won’t exactly become an all-time-classic with that kind of a concept.

ENJOYMENT SECTION: 8/10
Awesome if you’re into pedophilia and sadism. Terrible if you’re not. It looses 2 points for the non-existent ending.

VERDICT: 7.5 / 10
Hmmm… Normally, the accused would be found guilty for all his sickening tastes… But because he provided us with more than just brainless porn, he is found NOT GUILTY!

I am writing this review as a warning to each and every one of you sick-hungerers. DO NOT watch this anime. Despite the other reviews stating that this is the TV-version of Mai-chan's daily life, this feels more like an inconsistent attempt to appeal to both normal hentai-lovers, and some sick-lovers. But it doesn't have any Torture, Anal, etc. It has ONE rape scene, and you don't get to watch it. She is chained up a few times, but the abuse goes no further. There is a little hint of domination and depravity in a later episode, but it is again a weak attempt. Mostly this hentai has consensual sex, where both parts are Romeo and fucking Juliet. I am horrified by the misleading reviews on this hentai. I feel like a moron having watched and waiting for some sick stuff. It is never there. Give up. There is also a scene where the main-girls master is about to give her a whipping, and is getting super-serious. You get all excited, and aww-yeah. This is what I've been waiting for! No, says the anime, and skips the part.

The sound in the beginning gives you this pitoresquè feeling that something is about to go down. Church-choirs. But the music quality goes down as the anime proceeds. The VA's are pretty standard.

The art is like you would imagine an old hentai to be, and is severely weird at times, but it has it's own charm.

The characters... Oh my god. The main-girl has NO personality, and she gradually becomes a whore. She is in love with a man named Andrew, who seems to be a parody of some retro shoujo-anime. Oh, and no one makes sense in this anime either.

But the thing about hentai is for many, the porn. The scenes are kept short, but the quantity is upped as a result. What got me off, was a few scenes in ep1 and 2, and the ending fuck.
