SynopsisTwo OVA episodes are bundled as DVDs with each of volumes 6 and 7 of the manga.
The first OVA is a prequel story written by the manga's author. Before the beginning of the main story, Rea and Chihiro have already met at a certain place - an outdoor hot-spring bath.
The second OVA takes place after the series (effectively episode 14). The Furuya family finds a mysterious young girl hiding under the household temple. |

The first episode in this OVA is about the fated day Chihiro found the book about resurrection; the book that the entire series revolved around for the most part. For what seemed at first to be one of those "filler" OVAs that have nothing to do with the series, this one was actually really good. The only negative thing I can say about it story-wise is the whole "fate" aspect seemed to be just a tad corny... JUST a tad... Nonetheless, I enjoyed it...
The second episode was utterly retarded. Without ruining the big ol' "tiwst" at the end, let's just say some stupid and pointless things go down in the Furuya household, and it pulls a "Little Nemo" ending on us (No, not Finding Nemo...).
Story (first episode): 9/10
Like I said, it may seem slightly corny, but as the rest of the series, the OVA is extremely well-written (well, let's not bring up what they did with the anime's last couple episodes). There really isn't anything to say other than its hinted that Chihiro's mom had more secrets than what we were told in the TV series. It's kind of hard to write anything without spoilers, but know that this OVA gives us the full story on how Chihiro finds the resurrection book and some more on how pervy Sanka Dan`ichiro is...
You may have heard about some nipple-shots in here... Well, there are... But it's not really meant to be "fappable" material, but rather to show how sick Rea's dad really is...
Well, there's a scene later that's supposed to get you all hot an bothered (just a short thing in a hot-springs that this OVA doesn't actually revolve around... Merely some fanservice). Anywho, I'll say no more!
Story (second episode): 3/10
I want to give it a 1/10 for wasting my time, but it has a kinda-sweet ending regarding Rea's step-mom. I really can't say anything other than this was a waste of my time, while the first episode was actually really good.
Story average: 6/10
Art (applied for both episodes): 8/10
The art in the entire series really isn't bad. It's well animated, has great directing and character design is great. However, the art DOES seem kind of half-assed in the TV series as well as in this OVA. It's not like it's TERRIBLE, as I've seen FAR WORSE in popular series, but I figured I had to be honest and say that...
As usual though, the directing is great... (so much I had to say it a second time :P)
Sound (both episodes): 10/10
As usual, the music is great and most of all fitting for the tone of the anime. The usual OP and ED are shown in the OVA, and I personally enjoy both... Even if the music doesn't fit your taste, I think you can at least agree it's fitting, right?
Regardless, I love the voices as usual, and there's nothing much else to say on this subject. No different from what I think about the TV series.
Character (both episodes): 10/10
Again, no different than the TV series...
I have to point out that just because Dan`ichiro is a perv it doesn't make him a bad character. Now, if he was a sick bastard but was terrible DONE, then I'd rate this lower... And he IS a sick bastard, but his character is executed very well... I just want to point that out, because I think we all can agree on how messed up he is (Although, finding out why he's so messed up was kind of sad...).
All of our usual characters appear in the OVA. Chihiro, Mero, Ranko, Rea... I still love them all :P Oh! But we see Chihiro's dad in normal clothes for once!
Enjoyment(both episodes): 6/10
I couldn't wait for the second episode... I was hoping we'd learn more about Chihiro's mom like we did in the first. As a regular reader of the manga, where his mom is actually still a mystery, I'm curious as to her story...
But then I'm fed this bullshit second episode that has nothing to do with anything regarding Sankarea as a whole. It's like that episode in the TV series about Mero and her stupid friends, and how they go around solving mysteries... It does nothing to buff up the plot or extend the story. I enjoyed the first episode 10/10 for sure, but the second... a 3/10, just to be nice I guess... and I liked seeing Rea some more (my waifu).
Overall: 8/10
Even with how bad the second episode was, this still plays out to an 8/10 (since I average out my scores...). On a whim I would've given it a 7/10, but because I'm fair... I'll give it an 8/10...
But yea, if you end up watching the OVA, just know the second episode has absolutely nothing worthwhile to the main story of Sankarea... It's just... well... "filler"... in the sense it sucks and is incredibly boring (as most -I said most- filler is). I know it's an OVA, but it still felt like I was watching a filler episode with the second one.
But yea... first episode was really good, I thought. read more

So, I watched both OVA's and now can write a review on it.
In short: the first is about Chihiro and how he had found a book about resurrection; the second is about Aria and her strange dream (I can't write what was this dream about because it will be a great spoiler for you; for same reason I'm not writing who is Chihiro&Aria).
Story:
First OVA is like a prequel for the TV series. If you didn't watched "Sankarea" yet, I strongly recommend you to start with this OVA -- you'll free from several question and won't say "WTF?!" after the first TV ep. 10/10.
Second is so strange and weakly connected to the main story. That is why I recommend you watch this after the TV series, but not the right after! 6/10.
Overall: 8/10.
Art:
Both OVA's are well-animated and have cute scenes. Quint essence of the TV series...
Nevertheless, I can't say that it's a masterpiece.
9/10.
Sound:
Just like I said about art. Also 9/10.
Character:
Well, well. All characters, except Aria in her dream, are shown true. True, but not great.
8/10.
Enjoyment:
7/10, also due to better first and worse second OVA.
Overall:
8/10. Very, very good additional episodes of "Sankarea". I like it. read more
