The first word that came to my head after watching the first episode of Katte ni Kaizou was, "...What?"
I kid you not, this is the weird, dumbest and most insane gag-humor anime I have ever seen...
From the mind that created "Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei," I have to say Katte ni Kaizou is even MORE absurd, if you can believe that...
Basically, it's Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei meets Bobobo... Can you wrap your mind around that? No? Me neither... I'm still wondering how an anime like this words... but the thing is: it works, and that's what matters most.
Story: 7/10
It's so dumb, it's funny!
Katsu Kaizou is a 17-year-old super-genius cyborg who believes in aliens... and stuff...
Or something...
Well, that's the gist of the story, give or take...
He's really just a weird-ass kid who believes he's a cyborg...
So yea, the story revolves around this 17-year-old boy and his attending of a normal high school setting.
Nothing really happens throughout the OVA, though... It's pretty much the same thing we have in Zetsubou Sensei, where the characters discuss the most incredibly absurd subjects...
Except, in Katte ni Kaizou, the conversations are even... weirder!!
Art: 10/10
Simply, but amazingly animated. It could be the crappiest anime in the world, but if it's animated by SHAFT, then it's going to look beautiful visually.
Even with the simplistic designs in everything, it's still amazingly animated...
If you've seen Zetsubou Sensei, then you know the art-style. It's almost exactly the same!!
Sound: 7/10
Weird-ass opening and weird-ass ending... But the weirdness fits this weird anime ;)
Voices all seem to fit...
There's nothing to really say here that hasn't been said!!
Character: 10/10
Just like Zetsubou Sensei (again!!), it's entirely character-based. This anime relies on the interaction between characters and the execution of gag-jokes...
The characters are so insanely whacky that it feels like I'm watching Bobobo all over again...
I've already discussed the main character, but take him for example... Quirky, right?
I'm not really sure what else to say... All you need to know is that they're... insane... all of them...
Enjoyment: 10/10
I love a good gag-humor anime! I want more Katte ni Kaizou!! With how long-running the manga was (which I have not read... I don't know where to find it...), I wish the anime was long-running, too! I want more of these incredibly whacky characters, I tell you!!!
Anywho, it's hilarious, quirky, well-animated and has the perfect director for the job: Akiyuki Shinbo!!! He seems to love doing the weirdest anime ;)
Overall: 9/10
GREAT yet SHORT gag-anime. If you're like me and want more Zetsubou Sensei or other various gag-animes, give this one a try. If you're a fan of the genre and don't mind the sexual jokes (which are pretty abundant in this anime!!! I forgot to mention: a lot of sex jokes...), try out Katte ni Kaizou ;) read more

This series is well written, has good artwork, good animation, good characters, and a decent soundtrack. So why only a 7? The reason it's so good, and the reason it's not a 10 is the same: it's a prototype for Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.
It's pretty simple really. The characters look, sound, and act like the characters in SZS. The animation, soundtrack, sound effects are all similar for obvious reasons. The quirky randomness is the same. The way the story seems to take place at school, but the characters meet around town and engage in silliness is the same.
But as stated earlier, it's a prototype. As you watch, you can tell Kette ni Kaizou is less mature and sophisticated than SZS. The former has less social commentary(though it does happen occasionally) and replaces it with ridiculousness, sexual jokes, and general being over the top.
Since these connections are so clear, they are constantly in your mind as you watch. I'm sure this was done intentionally to ride on SZS's popularity but that's what's holding it back. It doesn't have it's own identity, and will always be overshadowed by it's better and more successful older(or younger depending on how you look at it) brother. It's still fun, enjoyable, and funny, just not great. read more
