I was wondering, how do I get into the Touhou "universe"? Could you help me and explain a bit more about it? I know absolutely nothing about it, but there's something about it that makes me want to know more!

Yeah, I still disagree about Utena. My interpretation of the show's message was that change in status quo will come not from violence and heroes rather than relationships and personal growth. Ikuhara presents the classical trope fairytail in the beginning and throughout the whole run slowly flips it on its head. The formulaic storytelling really helped drive the message home for me, we see that the fights and episodic structure remain same while the character development and interpersonal dynamics fluctuate. I only rolled my eyes at the 1 minute pre-fight opening song on some occasions so maybe if you rewatch it some day and skip those parts you may enjoy it more??, or maybe not idk. I'll give Flip Flappers another try and I'm glad we can see eye to eye on Wonder Egg.

Mawaru, I love that show but well, I found Utena to be more intelligent. I felt parts of the plot weren't completely thought out and even after reading up on the events and era it was based on, I was still unsure if Ikuhara knew how to tie the symbolic implications to the characters they represent. Tbh I think he kind of winged Mawaru and called it a day hah but eh, it's still on my fav list.

Finally, I checked Tumeneko out, I really like them. Thanks for the recc, and sorry for taking my time with the reply.

Hey, you're very much free to dislike machikado but I am free to like it too. Besides, popular opinion hardly aligns with yours. That anime topped japanese 4chan charts in 2019 and flopped globally maybe only because the west despises moe.

It's interesting to me you'd like Mawaru and Adolescence but not Utena, but Utena is indeed less dense and bombastic than those + symbolic animes like Flip Flappers, Wonder Egg, Kyousougiga so I can see you not liking it. Makes me sad but it's fair game.

Moving on from anime trashtalk, do you listen to touhou doujin music and if so can you recommend some circles you like?

You live in California, so you should understand a bit AndyVidal's comment.

I did not go into it because of its writer. To be honest I am not a huge fan of Urobuchi. I understand why some became fans of Madoka Magica and Psycho-Pass, but his anime usually have certain signature issues that I find off-putting (e.g. overreliance on shock value, heavy-handed nihilism, amoral characters being depicted as heroes, etc.)

Still, thanks for your recommendation. I will check it out.

I completely agree with your review of Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom. I started watching the show with 7/10 expectations and almost cringed all the way through. It's so frustrating that despite its qualities I ended up giving it 4/10 and a review pointing out similar issues.
