It’s not heavy on the romance but it is sprinkled in the background. In the manga/light novel, it’s a sloooow burn but does become more central to the story

She cut off the end of her own finger to pretend she sent in Maomao's. It's why Maomao says in ep 24 that if you cut off the end of your little finger, it'll grow back.

I would say this anime has subtle romance at best. It’s not the main thing you’ll be seeing.

If I had to choose between One Piece and a girlfriend...I think I'll go with One Piece

There are (or there will be) hints of romance at some points, but they're not central to the plot. Like seasoning on a dish that's already good.
