Rather sad that one, although I suppose Ginko was still able to help the boy in some way, even if he couldn't free the girl from the Mushi, although obviously that didn't seem to matter to her too much.

Really good episode.
I wonder why Ginko didn't try to cure Akoya. Even if she sniffed the flower one more time, that cure could have helped other people, that eventually got that Mushi.

This episodic format of Mushishi is not boring! It has different story and here's something I want. You cannot expect something to happen between episodes. That's why it is really great. Unlike Jigoku Shoujo, w/c is also in episodic format. You can expect that the hater will pull off the string. But here, we can't expect that Ginko can save the day or what? LOL! Bad Mushi or Good Mushi. That's what made this show great!

Come on! MORE!

Even if it was a bit creepy... this show is too peaceful to scare anyone.... even that bloody part.... it just seemed kind of natural o_o

But that must suck.... being unable to remember what you did yesterday and not being able to talk... even if you do like the freshness of every day... it just seems like a really sad thing >.<

Anywaaays.... on to the next ep ^^

Sig WILL change soon~

Beautiful episode. I really enjoyed it. I liked Ginko's words at the end about digging up the cave so Nagi could leave anytime-- sad, but rather hopeful ending.

it was less interesting and less mysterious than previous episodes, especially I disliked this obviously evil character, girl's father; it's even a sort of cliché
that's because of this anime seemed to be something strange and awesome and far from using common plots, types of characters, etc.
howbeit it's the most conciliative thing i've ever seen

Weeeeell, I guess it's normal for people to associate that girl's behaviour to a drug addict, but for a very different reason I actually thought it was very interesting how that girl felt when the mushi took over.
We often don't realize it, but every species (not talking about mushi here) has a different lifespan. We live many many years, some animals live over hunderd years, some trees even live over 300 years and then you have species like bugs that only live 1 day. Different lifespans, probably also mean different lifestyles and approach towards life.
This episode looked upon this fact ^.^ Maybe I think too deeply.. but that's why I also love this anime so much.
Too bad she got controlled again, but at least she's happy now.

Yes, it's a little bit cliche and it's different from the other episodes which had no good or bad people. But I really didn't mind it here. Well, this kind of person does exist, right?

I was more focused in the discussion about hapiness/sadness and time. I have never considered that one of the reason that make us humans miserable is the long time ahead of us, but it does make sense. To the ikegami all the experiences are new and unique, everything is so fast and breathtaking that they can't even think about it, only feel. Living a new life each day. Dying to be reborn as a new being. It's a really interesting concept.

I'm so in love with this show right now. :)

Nice episode. I think this one had a happy-ish ending.

The theme music playing throughout the episode really reminded me of a song by Snow Patrol.

I'm enjoying this more and more. Shame everything isn't more tied together.

very sad ending! it's strange though, i'm not sure if i would have done the same thing the girl did. would the sensation of living an entirely new life each day be appealing? everything fresh and new?

i suppose with a feeling like that, it must have been an easy concept to accept her eventual death, because everything was too fast for even to grasp or think about.

i think i appreciate my own thoughts too much to want to live something so fast-paced that i can't sit back and understand anything.

I feel it's similar to the analogy used earlier... drug use. The idea for most people seems ridiculous. Most people think, "I like the way things are now, I wouldn't want to ruin it with xyz."

However, once you try it, your whole perception changes. Setting aside physical dependency, one can become mentally addicted to a substance, and no longer be able to return to the state of mind they previously held.

Now imagine being forced into it unknowingly, and thinking life was just that way. Every day you feel high as a kite etc, just because you think life is that amazing. As soon as someone "wakes" you from your illusion, you realize life is a much different reality than the one you thought you knew. Compound the fact that (in this episode's scenario) your father was just killed because you had exposed his fraud, and you are now alone.

She chose to go back. Many addicts choose the same.

Just my take on it, anyway.

This episode seemed almost like a metaphor for drug addiction. I like how Mushishi links the supernatural to everyday things or things that you don't think about like that.

Another lovely episode.

It was a tad bittersweet; I couldn’t help but feel a bit sad that she decided to go back to the way she was before being cured.

I understand, though, once you’ve experienced something that changes your perception of life, in which everything’s fresh, completely unknown and renewed… A new page to be written and torn to repeat every day, no bad memories holding you down or remorse making you guilty. Just a new experience, a new whole life, every day… It’s difficult to accept when it’s gone. Once you get used to something, you can’t habituate to anything else. You don’t want to change.
I think, then procrastinate.
Therefore, I am.

Heartbreaking.

She had the experience of living through her life in the span of a day. Assuming an average lifespan of a human is 70 years, it will 25550 ( 365 * 70 )times longer than before.

It's episodic, for sure, in that it follows a format, as other people have said... but I love it because you can never really tell if an episode is going to well well or not.

I really liked the episode. :) It really is too bad that the people on that island seemed "addicted" to the effects of the mushi from the flower, after they had experienced it.

So this town is quite peaceful but it looks to me they are getting high of flowers. The grandfather was mean and didn't like the girl for who she was unlike that boy.

Too bad Ginko's efforts were in vain.

It got me wondering though.. since now some more villager have discovered the intoxicating fragrance of those flowers, they might start sniffing them too and become ikegami too and expect to be fed rice balls. Just a thought.

I think they are referring to this flower:

The wild morning glory
It's seeds contains the chemical LSA, which is a similar drug to LSD. Time stretching and perceiving psychedelic mushi-like beings are some of it's common effects.

2 years later, I'm still in love with this episode. The way it was crafted, the escapism theme it represents, the melancholic music, the poem of the cycle of sun and flowers found in the beginning and at the end of the episode.

So poignant and tragically beautiful.
