I first checked out this series because the name of the story enticed me. "Kimi to Boku" translates to "You and I" and usually indicates something romantic. The "no saigo no senjou" part could be read as "last war", and the premise immediately grabbed me - two lovers on opposite sides of a battlefield who have to decide between their allegiances to their country or their love for each other.

Story

The story structure switches between the swordsman Iska and the "star mage" Alice, creating a tense but cute narrative as the reader learns their inner feelings and watching how their paths end up crossing.

There's a decent blend of action as the two have to fight enemies on opposite side's of the war. The series has "star mages" who use elemental spells with specific strengths and weaknesses, and it also features a variety of weaponry from sniper rifles to grenades to the special "star" swords that Iska uses.

Character

The main two characters follow standard archetypes - Iska is a noble soldier with ideals of justice, fairness, and peace. Alice is also strong-willed, kind-hearted, and also seeks to bring the world to a state of peace. But the best character moments are when these two come together - creating fun, cute romantic situations that are reminiscent of some high school romantic comedies that are also sweet and meaningful.

Several side characters are enjoyable too. Iska's squad has three different soldiers with different specialties and personalities, such as Jhin the coolheaded sniper. Likewise, Alice has a reliable assistant and close friend who provides a voice of reason to Alice's emotions are times too.

Art

There's a not a lot of art because its a light novel, but the art I've seen looks fairly good. Although I find Alice's breasts rather unnecessarily large, I think the character designs and artwork are all very clean looking and appealing to look at. The characters are easy to distinguish, and the artist shows the emotions very well in the faces and motions.

Overall

The story overall is a very enjoyable mix of romance, action, and fantasy. It has a good pace, switching between battles and day-to-day activities, and there seems to be some hidden aspects to the characters' pasts that will be brought to the forefront in the future.

Characters are fun, the story is engaging, and the war is a great setting for the romance. Overall, I think the series is great for fans of the star crossed lovers trope.
