No one wrote a review for the manga here? Hmmm...odd.

Well, I'll write a short one, as I feel like everyone should have some idea of what they're walking into here. This is the first review I've ever written on MAL, so please bear with me.

Chaika the Coffin Princess is a fantastical story of a lackadaisical young man (Tooru) who has no skills beyond his military training as a saboteur. There's not much use for a saboteur during a time of peace, so naturally, he has nothing to do. One day, Tooru's sister forces him to go out and get a job so they can eat, and he wanders aimlessly until he meets a strange girl carrying a coffin on her back, claiming to be a wizard, as well as the daughter of the deceased king.

Chaos ensues, as friends and enemies alike seek out this princess for reasons both friendly and malicious.

I found the story to be quite enjoyable. A bit predictable and linear, but not at all unpleasant.

The art is nice, but nothing to write home about.

The characters are average. Just average. Nothing particularly stands out about any of them.

Overall, I do think it was worth a read and a watch. If you're looking for a decent fantasy story with a few twists and turns, you could do much worse.

If I take a liking to a particular series, I try and collect all material regarding it. With Hitsugi no Chaika, I picked up the five manga volumes after watching season one of the anime. I'm particularly fond of Chaika as a character and it was her that carried the series for me. That said, the manga is enjoyable, however, it does not go as far as the anime does. In only five volumes, it is quite short but if you, like me, enjoyed the anime, then picking up the manga is recommended for fans of the series. Little excerpts here, some neat artwork there, perhaps a few details the anime brushed over. It's source material and I am not sure why it did not continue alongside the anime. I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation out there somewhere.

There are light novels (12 volumes in all) that fully compliment the anime but I believe these are only available in Japanese (to my knowledge)
