I was inspired to write this review by bad press this show is getting on the web. Well, okay, more like random idiots badmouthing it. That’s how the Internet is. Anyway, I don’t think this show is as bad as some have made it out to be. In fact, I would even go as far as calling it good.

The strength of Yumekui Merry is in creating mood. In particular all the freaky dream sequences, which are helped in no small part by the music. The characters are intricate and their interactions maintain sufficient complexity for an enjoyable watch (assuming you like your villains so thoroughly despicable).

Unfortunately, complexity is also the show’s weakness. It never really decides what it wants to be. Throughout its run, the show attempts to weave together so many diverse elements that, instead of a tapestry, it winds up with a tangled mess of yarn that may leave you vaguely hoping for a second season to tie up some of the loose ends.
