Mixed Feelings
Preliminary (15/26 eps)
If you don't think while you're watching it, you're fine.
Two major problems I had while watching this were the high predictability of the characters actions and some major gaps in the story. You dont get to know where and when all of it is situated, how this so called virtual reality can effect the non-virtual world, why it is so important to the kids and so on. Stuff simply happens and you have to deal with it.
Of course there were good intentions. I like thinking ahead of already existing technologies like for example googles virtual reality glasses and to add some scifi elements to it. Nonetheless the designs are cheap, Sachii, the Antiviruspet, it looks just ridiculous, the younger sister of the protagonist is so annoying, I can't even find words for that.
What they call "obsolete space", broken, wrong coded or damaged virtual space, might be a hint towards the decreasing free spaces in Japan, where only for example shinto shrines give you an idea of what a precapitalistic society might have looked like. If you leave the shrine you have to face the reality again, everywhere are ongoing building processes, laws and so on. Such places are pictured as the last resort of peace in a world that's completely administrated, governed by different authorities and bureaucracy. Of course this is romanticised image, but I guess it's about the feeling not about the impact a historical stagnation might have had on the quality of our lives.
Nonetheless I wasn't really able to enjoy it.
