An anime about dolls that come to life is a pretty odd concept yet in the case of Rozen Maiden it somehow works. The main reason for this, as is the case of most good animes, the strength of the characters.

The story revolves around Jun a boy who spends his time shut in his room buying stuff off the internet then returning it before the expiry date instead of going to school after suffering a trauma of his own making. After visiting a website which asks him to put his order in the second drawer a suitcase flies through his window which contains a doll called Shinku. After winding the doll up Jun finds Shinku comes alive. However, Shinku has, for a doll, an assertive personality and treats Jun as nothing more than a servant. More dolls turn up to join Shinku making Jun's solitary life complicated and embarking on a battle with the evil Suigintou in various dream worlds whilst learning you can not just give up on life and stop fighting giving the story a touch of morality.

Rozen Maiden has slap stick comedy which no more than Jun being slapped around by the dolls and the boy who likes Jun's sister, Nori, getting shot down every time he tries to confess to her. To Rozen Maiden's credit this comedy doesn't get old despite being pretty repetitive.

Despite the strength of character and the good story Rozen Maiden could have been great. If it focused more on resolving human trauma than a story involving the dolls then I would be reviewing something special but alas I'm wondering what if.

A great show but could have been more.
