Mixed Feelings
Preliminary (9/13 eps)
Baka and Test is an anime I really wanted to like. It seemed like an interesting idea, although unoriginal, when I first heard of the series. Unfortunately, what I got was a very boring and bland anime that wasn't very interesting at all.

PROS

The intro to this anime was absolutely amazing. It is very catchy and fast-paced, thus, making the viewer very interested in watching each episode (whether they are bad or good). It never gets old or boring, unlike a lot of the other stuff in this anime. I don't think I've been entranced by an intro this much since Lucky Star. I loved it.

The art style of this anime is another thing to applaud. Each episode is very beautiful to look at. Anyone of the images in Baka and Test could be used in an art gallery to show the power of anime, visually.

CONS

I have a ton of problems with this series, but I guess I'll start with the characters. Every single person in this anime is uninteresting. I didn't care about the goals of any of them. The so-called "villains" were your usual generic bad guys. Nothing new or interesting to see.

Next, the storyline itself. Baka and Test is pretty much Yu-Gi-Oh, but taking place in a school The attack system, which was in Yu-Gi-Oh, is replaced by history, math, and English problems. So, it's basically trying to make school look cool by combining elements of Yu-Gi-Oh with school life. I don't want to accuse the show of ripping Yu-Gi-Oh off because it could be a coincidence, but I was very upset to see this. The parts of the anime that took place away from the battlefield were very boring. I actually started to daydream many times while watching this anime, which is NEVER a good sign for anything.

Baka and Test is completely empty of laughs. This probably contributed to myself daydreaming during many episodes. Many characters tried to do certain things that were supposed to be funny, but never were. It's hard to find humor in a show that is so empty of any emotion from the main characters.

Lastly, the fan service got on my nerves by the midpoint of the series. Look, there's nothing wrong with having fan service as long as you have an engaging show. That's the reason why Highschool of the Dead was able to get away with it - it was very entertaining. Baka and Test is a boring show that has fan service. Imagine that - watching a show that is devoid of any emotional response from the viewer and shows tons of female's "upper parts." When shown, these female parts are not done in the nude, but they still are quite distracting. I am surprised that HOTD is the anime most people name when talking about fan service. For me, Baka and Test takes the cake.

OVERALL

Baka and Test is great, technically. In all other categories, it fails. I can't really recommend this anime to anyone, unless you are a straight A student who loves school and ponder about Yu-Gi-Oh coming into reality. It's a pretty poor anime with almost no redeeming factors. A huge waste of time.
