I really got touched by this anime. I knew for a while that so many people said it was a gory mess that would end up leaving you depressed. Lots of limbs flying off. And yeah, there were parts where I felt really sad, angry or flustered at the lack of communication that went on with characters that would prolong/provoke so many situations (but you find that in all anime). It never really reflects what you would do in a situation- so i'm not gonna even include that in my review of this anime. I think it's really unique. And becuase there isn't only one masterpiece, I'm gonna go out and say for the pysch/thriller or horror/supernatural category, this is a masterpiece. My only gripe is why the hell they didn't put some more money into this and lengthen the episode list??? I hate it when something has such potential and is unique and due to scheduling and restrictions, they shorten the series drastically and leave plotholes. Might as well take more time and season half seasons at a time. There is sadly only one season. There would be no point to a second season becuase there isn't enough material to make a 2nd. There is a huge potential however for a second season as you have several undiscussed/ignored plot factors. Director's horns, Lucy/Nyu's ears, Diclonian facility still existing???, but sadly I just think no effort was made into tapping into these potential sources. :( So sad. :(

It's saving grace for me was kinda the ending. Well, the mid-end of episode 13 to be exact. The ending i hated becuase it's one of those mysterious fill-in-the-desired-ending craps. But it is extremely rare to have a story/book/anime series that ends the way you exactly want it to! So I was pleasantly surprised when my theoretical absolute best-ending-moment appeared! :D One part in specific (ep 13) did and I am not only shocked but it was so beautiful it made me cry I was so happy. Let's just say if you had a developing crush on Lucy (Nyu's alterior person) and appreciate good, deep romance no matter the surrounding circumstances, then you won't be sad. ;) I mean yeah, if you analyzed it and pointed stuff that would never be realistic, yeah you'll be less satisfied. But if you appreciate an agaisnt-all-odds romance (in the case of two individuals), you'll be really touched. For those who've seen it. I think the series should've ended at the stone staircase. Am I right? Everthing after was irrelevant and irksome. Like why the heck did Lucy have to go after that and get herself into hot water??? Why couldn't everyone have had some noodles in the maple house and been happy? lol. Frustrating. Instead, now a certain person has no ears and if you compare it to the manga, they revert back to their simpleton self for almost a year, and arghhh it just killed it for me after that.

I'm very glad the ending of the anime differed from the manga. Even if its confusing as hell, it's satisfactory becuase trueeee feelings come out just before the last 10 minutes of the episode.
The gore was annoying at times, but not repuslive. There are some scenes that really tug on your heartstrings and play with your morality. It really affects the human brain to be thrown into viewing such a hostile scene episode after episode. I did an all nighter cuz I loved it so much, but def. take some mini breaks. There is a scene involving a puppy and some bullies and...well... if you're an animal lover like me who was on the verge of writing a scathing letter to the publisher- just be prepared for that one unpleasant scene and maybe skip it. It was hard to watch and left me in the foulest of moods. I can't stand rape and animal cruelty. This has only the latter. I only hope that they would either offer some stinkin' OVA's already (besides ep 11.5) and issue a Blu Ray version. The music is so wonderful and series was great in its natural japanese audio.
