Well that's the theme.
You should be open minded enough to accept the relationship, as an outsider, because only the couple involved understands the best and eventually comes to terms accepting each others needs.
Often caught hiding true feelings..from each other or others around. It's interesting how the story develops into accepting themselves finally. Until then we see their relationships with other likable characters most of who are somehow related to their much younger past. We see some old relationships revived / developed.
But eventually they are all left a quiet confused, yet happy for the couple by the end.
