Phew, rarely have I ever been this emotional over a manga. Kono Oto Tomare is about the koto, a traditional Japanese instrument. The manga (and anime) is a mix of the music, slice-of-life, and romance genres.

Why is it so good? First of all, the manga looks absolutely stunning and, for me, is one of the most beautifully drawn manga I have ever read. But above all, it shines through its fantastic characters and their incredibly well-developed backstories, which truly haunt you and don’t let go. Paired with unbelievably well-written characters, I couldn’t help but completely inhale this manga.

Everything just works for me here: the tension is consistently high, the competitions are brilliantly staged, and every important opponent is explored in depth, to the point where you even feel like cheering for them as well. On top of that, there is a first-class romance that ranks among my all-time second favorites – and that with two couples at once. The characters learn from one another and continuously grow, which made me smile more than once and even brought me to tears.

The manga is so extremely cozy that sometimes I just want to look at old panels or reread entire chapters, simply because I want to experience that feeling again. From the very first second, this work completely captured me emotionally, and I cannot emphasize enough how good it is. For me, it is definitely a top 5 manga.
