Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister might seem like a generic harem on the surface, with its fairly typical jokes found in other works of its kind, but it gradually becomes a quite enjoyable piece thanks to the attachment to the characters and how much more we discover about them, sometimes in surprising ways.
Yes, this manga has its share of supernatural elements, which add to its charm and set it apart, something that previous reviews based on just three chapters obviously won't grasp.
The artwork is splendid. As the chapters go on, you can clearly see the author improving his craft; rereading the very first chapter after finishing the whole series, the difference in facial expressions and character art is noticeable. I personally really liked the round, expressive faces of the maids. The paneling is also well done, and whether it’s the Amagami sisters or the landscapes and backgrounds, it really sets the mood.
Regarding our main character, he’s great, has his own personality, and slowly evolves, which prevents the work from feeling repetitive or overly long. So rest assured, he’s definitely not your typical throwaway isekai protagonist. Like I wrote earlier, the characters are truly endearing, especially the Mikos, they’re genuinely great characters. I also really like the secondary characters we meet along the way; each adds their own little touch to the story. Some of them remain very minor, but they’re still relevant and contribute well to the whole.
Personally, I found the pacing to be good overall. The arcs are interesting and increasingly intriguing as they progress, and the few in-between chapters are enjoyable to read. That said, the events at the Sanctuary felt a bit repetitive, similar to how in Nisekoi there were several nearly identical outings to a same place. While this repetition does fit the core theme of the manga, a handful of chapters ended up feeling somewhat redundant. There was also one arc in particular that dragged on unnecessarily long.
Does the story make you want to keep reading chapter after chapter? I’d say it depends on you. If you connect with the characters, then absolutely yes. Otherwise, the beginning might feel slow and not very exciting, one of the main flaws I noticed.
Does the manga manage to stand out compared to other romcoms of its kind? Out of the fifty or so I’ve read or watched, I’d say it ranks well above most. Is there a lot of fanservice? There’s a fair bit in the first half of the manga, but after certain events it decreases a lot. Aside from a few jokes here and there, it’s not really a focus.
Without spoiling anything, I think the author managed the story quite well from start to finish. Not every question gets a clear answer, but the way it’s written made me feel satisfied overall, and I didn’t have any bitterness after closing the final chapter.
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend it to fans of harem and/or romance, especially if you enjoyed The Quintessential Quintuplets, which is my favorite romance and shares many similarities with the Amagami sisters. For other curious readers, I’d say try reading up to chapter 41 or 50 to get a real sense of the work, though I can’t guarantee it will be your cup of tea.
Thanks for reading.
