Mutafukaz is brimming with style and charm. It's not the best movie in the world by any stretch of the imagination, but it's worth the watch.
Mutafukaz's art is its best quality. Brimming with style and charm, every part of the artistic process is shined to near perfection. What stands out most to me is the environmental design--I really haven't quite seen anything like it in animation before. The movie captures the atmosphere so well. The character design is really cool too--weird and strange and not at all the polished perfection we're used to seeing in anime, but still really good and charming nonetheless. The studios and animators working on this captured Guillaume "Run" Renard's art style to a T. Seeing things move in this movie is masterful. My only gripe is that the action scenes don't hit as intensely as they should, due to static cinamatography.
People are hating on the dialouge, but honestly, I really liked it. I watched the english dub, and it was a far cry from the dubbing I'm used to. The dialouge felt supernatural, and coupled with awesome voice direction, helped me imerse myself in the world of DMC even more. There is a lot of swearing, but I never felt like it was excessive, or took away from the immersion.
Where this movie strugglest the most is it's story. Protag is secretly a cool superhuman, runs from government agency, meets woman, woman moves his heart, etc. etc very by the books. The story is very 2006, especially in it's depiction of woman--they're either mothers, or the doe eyed love interest, or not in the movie at all. (They do have big tits, though.) There are a lot of cool elements in this story--the machos, the ancient superhero luchadores, the kidnapped scientists--but the concepts don't get much room to breathe, packed in an hour and 30 minutes. The movie definitely suffers from being an adaptation at some regard, as Lino and Vinz pop around DMC and surrounding areas at almost random.
In spite of its flaws, this is still a super fun watch, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested--don't let the review scores push you away.
