A story of ten thousand and two thousand years more once again, Aquarion Evol is a sequel to Genesis of Aquarion, and boy does the more things changes, the more things stay the same. 24,000 years since Apollonius fell in love with a human......a new conflict arises
Fighting angels? No sorry, invading aliens kidnapping people, notably women. Oh but we're fighting with Aquarion right? Uh kinda, basically DAEVA got hit with Christianity so the boy and girl Elements are segregated and they fight in boy and girl Aquarias (and something happened some time ago so they put a guard to the Vector Machines don't mix again anyways). Crazy.
Oh and the original Aquarion? Yeah that's a movie now. Some of the details changed due to time but the story of Apollo is eternalized for future generations to inspire them. And inspiring of course to our main protagonists, Amata Sora and Mikono Suzushiro.
Thats how our story starts, boy meets girl at a movie theater watching Aquarion, and they soon get caught up in an Abductor invasion, and NEO DAEVA's defense against them. Wings sprout, and a journey begins once again. GO AQUARION!!!
Aquarion Evol feels like a Macross Frontier to Genesis of Aquarion's SDF Macross, just full of love. And both series have Yoko Kanno as composer, so you know what that's the best praise ever. This is more of a plot driven show than the original Aquarion, and it is it a perfect sequel story. More interesting Element powers, more drama, the Shadow Angels were a more mythical enemy, Altair's Abductors are so SO real that Evol hasn't aged a single day since its airing in 2012. I'm not spoiling it as its a series long mystery, but once all the cards are played, Evol becomes an ever relevant classic. Fanservice? Yeah, we're going up on that in perfect ratio of the pilots repressed sexuality. Not that they can try anything under NEO DAEVA's supervision.
All the pilots Amata and Mikono meet are great characters, some are parallels to the Genesis of Aquarion cast, but then theres characters who add great new elements and dynamics, such as the fujoshi girl. We love fujoshi girl.
Love, connection, it's all there and even stronger this time, including our very own Fudo. Not Gen Fudo this time, Zen Fudo!!! The play of words and metaphors, the buddhist elements. Aquarion Evol is its own series, but also a great closing of loose ends thematically for the Myth of Apollonius. After all, myths are written only by noble lives, be it Altair or Vega.
Music, its Akino and Bless4 again and Bless4 is great. And she sings the ED too on top of the OP. Its so good. Every time I watch the missiles fired becomes flowers in the op is a smile moment.
