So, here's the thing about Mirai Nikki: it packs an interesting, solid central premise, some genuinely thrilling moments, and some really pretty animation. But that's not why you want to watch it.

At the risk of oversimplification, the real draw is the character of Gasai Yuno, and her dynamic with the main character. It's not an exaggeration to call Yuno one of the most compelling anime characters to come along in a long while. Playing the 'crazy murderous stalker' as the only real ally is a stroke of genius, and moments where she's unleashed are unforgettable.

That being said, Mirai Nikki suffers from some uneven plotting, some really baffling tonal changes, and some filler. The show ricochets between deadly serious murder games and happy moe comedy at the most bizarre moments, ruining any sustained tension. Some stock music also frustrates in moments of terror.

Granted, none of these gripes are giant, awful problems, but they are a definite detriment to Mirai Nikki, which is a shame, because when the show works, it knocks it out of the park.

If only it were a little more consistant. As it stands, Mirai Nikki is a solid thriller that has a great character to keep you watching when the story drags.
