Preliminary (9/135 chp)
This classic mahjong manga by Masayuki Katayama is a guide to basic mahjong strategy cleverly disguised as an entertaining story. The protagonist, Miiko Okaba, is a terrible mahjong player who is accepted into the pro league based entirely on her physical appearance (which is apparently a real-life issue in women's mahjong). In a chance encounter, she meets Namidame, the former pro mahjong champion who has just tendered his resignation from the league. He agrees to tutor her, and at the same time, gets back into pro mahjong himself, having to start all over in the rookie league.

Each chapter has Miiko learning a basic lesson in mahjong from Namidame, including which hands to go for and which hands to fold, good and bad waits, when to call discards, etc.

The art quality is sub-standard, but this is not a series where the art particularly matters. You're here to learn how to play mahjong, and to cheer on Miiko and Namidame in their pro endeavors.
