In most cases I have difficulty with adapations or remakes of things that I love. When you're a diehard fan of the original, a weak spin-off that doesn't do it any justice seems like a painful, personal insult. Despite my initial trepidation, I decided to risk possible dissapointment and watch the rebuilds.
I have not regretted it for a single moment. Evangelion 2.22 was mindblowingly amazing.

The animation quality is superb, with upgrades to the style and aesthetic feel of the show both subtle and extreme.

The characters stay true to their complicated personalities and motives, and the new characters that are added seem interesting and pertinent.

Unlike Evangelion: 1.0, which followed the storyline of NGE very closely, 2.0 diverges completely.
I like to say that 1.0 stands next to the original NGE story, while 2.0 waves goodbye from across the room before strapping on rocket boots and blasting off into space.
The plot moves so quickly and changes so drastically that I have no idea where it's going to go, but I know that I can't wait to find out.

As for action, the fight scenes are simply awesome. Dramatic, bestial, vicious and brutal.

My only issue with 2.0 is the soundtrack. While some of the pieces are lovely and work very well, there are a few choices that I just can't agree with. I particularly dislike the vocals. I understand that it's supposed to emphasize the visceral impact of a situation when juxtaposed with light, innocent music, but it just didn't work for me. Instead of emphasizing, it actually subtracted from the scenes.

Basically I have one nitpick amongst a mountain of praise for this rebuild. I thoroughly recommend Evangelion 2.0 to absolutely everybody... even the people who may be mentally and emotionally scarred by it.
