The emotions that both go through seemed spot on. I think of myself as reasonably intelligent and though my experience happened in my 20s I remember a girl falling for me and I having no clue. You have to reorient your whole way of thinking especially if they are a good friend. The dynamics of how both Risa dealt with Otani's initial denseness, and later once he had clued in, how both interacted were the best parts of the series. But the whole series was really incredibly watchable.
But for this to really work the voice acting had to be spot on and it was. Risa was voiced by a truly gifted seiyu and Otani wasn't far behind. I believe this series is undubable (if that's a word).
The graphics are very good, close to outstanding sometimes, and the music never got in the way. This is the best romantic comedy anime that I've seen. The only other one in it's class is Nodame Cantibile.
