I'm not a big fan of writing serious reviews of the anime I watch, but people seem to not be getting this piece of art right here. This is a COMEDY. Not a drama. Not a slice of life. This is 100% a comedy anime. I don't know much about the original manga, and only watched 3 episodes up to now, but there are a lot of things you can take from it.
The plot follows Migi and Dali, twins who are adopted by an old couple as "Hitomi", one individual, from there, they have to pretend to be one person to keep living in the house and find the killer of their mother, who's in the city, to avenge her. Just by looking, it might seem like an whatever revenge anime, but when you realize that this is in fact a comedy and it doesn't take itself seriously by any means then (and only then) you'll start to really enjoy it.
There are some characters, some that already had some screen time and others who haven't, but the main point here is Migi and Dali. In the own lie they create, they are the same person, and the production is capable of delivering this very well as many times you don't know who is who, in a way, also making the audience believe that they are the same person. We can notice that one of the two (Don't ask me each one) is way more serious and wants at all cost to complete their mission than his brother, who's a little more of a sentimental kid.
The artwork is nothing special, it's not ugly, but it's not Kimetsu no Yaiba, so don't expect much from it. At least these first episodes were very consistent and capable of delivering all of them on the same level of quality, which is a good thing.
If Migi to Dali was a suspense anime that takes itself seriously (which I hope it doesn't become like this when they need to deepen the plot in the last couple of episodes), it would be one very bad anime, but there is a catch. The characters ARE serious and they portray themselves as so, plus, the situation is treated a very serious one by everyone in world created, although, it's delivered in such a fantastic way, with such a great comedic timing that the author/director is sampling begging you to understand that this IS NOT serious at all. I don't know if it was one inspiration, but this reminds me a lot of Souichi from Junji Ito (and some other works from him), as it's set in a serious environment, but with such nonsense and bizarre actions taking place that you can't help yourself but to laugh from it.
The way the 'suspense' scenes are delivered, like the one from the dining table, in such a bizarre way. The way they move around like snakes and hide in the most wtf place that makes you think 'how the hell was he able to get there without anyone noticing' is absurdly funny. Plus, the OST makes everything way better, as it's a classic horror/suspense type of soundtrack, almost as if they were some kind of creatures out of our comprehension. Although I really wish they could've been a little bit more "extreme" in some moments, with some very black solid hatching almost like a JoJo type of expression, as it would make everything way more absurd (and funny).
I really hope they understand that they can't evolve the plot too much, going for a serious closure. Overall it's not an amazing anime, it's indeed very funny if you're a fan of Junji Ito, for example. It's not the comedy with a girl with some very unique traits (Bully, big tits, vampire, don't talk, tall, dumb girl with glasses, etc...) that you see every single season, and people should give this a try.
Score: 8 (For now)
