Love is a cruel beast, and at the same time a peaceful creature. It is so unpredictable, it can be almost feared. You can not control who you love, nor is it easy to get rid of. Even if that person is dragged far away, even if you lose contact with that person, your memories and your heart will prevent you from ever being satisfied. Only through misery will you ever get over it. As sad as this may be, it is a reality. A reality that 5 Centimeters per Second shows us.

Two friends, Takaki and Akari, are both seperated before confessing their feelings. After a year, they finally meet again to share tender moments they have missed only to be seperated again, this time even further. At the time, cell phones hadn't come out, making getting their numbers in the future impossible, since they continue to change addresses. Time goes by, as there memories stubbornly hang on. This is something that I had always dreaded about love. You never know when it'll strike, and when it does, you'll never know what will happen next. this scenario is disturbingly realistic, and you can't help but feel depressed for the circumstances.

The art, honestly, is the best I have ever seen in anime. Easily. The artwork is stunning, and had me hit pause on several occasions. I was awestruck at the detail and beauty of the design.

The soundtrack is beautiful, with piano tracks that pull your heart in all directions, leaving you numb by the end. And believe me, that's a good thing.

The characters could've used a bit more of a backstory, but other than that, it was fine. With only three characters, there isn't much to elaborate on, but with everything else, it isn't a big problem.

Enjoyment was rough, but only because the amount of depression you will face will be large. If you are willing to go through it, the emotion that follows is unlike anything in the anime world, and carries a sense of reality with it. If it wasn't for the weight of emotion, I would call it a masterpiece, but it came just short. Still, it is a must watch, and I highly recommend it.
