Preliminary (68/80 chp)
I read the first two Tenchi manga adaptations around the same time as tackling the first two OVA series and the three True Tenchi Muyo novels. Personally, I think that's the best way to get the most out of the original Tenchi Muyo universe and it adds so much to the overall characterization, worldbuilding, and excitement of the series.

This manga picks right up with new stories in the Tenchi universe so this is really recommended for those who are at least aware of the characters and general setup. That said, the manga manages to capture the addicting character interactions (which I believe are the core of the series, especially after this last rewatch/read) while adding to the tenderness and thoughtfulness that sometimes gets lost in the harem setting and voice acting of the anime.

Some of the situations are pretty outlandish and some depictions are a little one-note and stereotypical in 2023 but the manga always tries to do the right thing and takes the high road. There are a lot of wistful, poignant, and teary moments over the course of this and the sequel series that deliver more drama/reflection than comedy. That said, the artstyle can certainly be too gratuitous (especially with women) and has a different vibe from the anime. Still, it manages to deliver quality Tenchi that takes the characters and circumstances into a slightly different but really canon-expanding direction. Highly recommended for fans of Tenchi or those who want to get their feet wet with the francise.
