Preliminary (21/24 eps)
This show is kind of amazing. It's clear that the directors are very, very talented at what they do. It's one of the prettiest shows I've ever watched, for starters, and it's incredible that they make every single detail SIGNIFICANT to the plot somehow. The storyline is rife with symbolism and mystery, and while it does have some jarring/confounding moments in the development (Ikuni......), it is presented so masterfully that you have to keep on watching.

Also, it has really, really great sound editing. All the music tracks are heartrending, and all the voice actors are really great.

The characters seem to be a little polarizing, in that some people really hate some of them, while others love all of them. I definitely belong to the latter category. I feel like the characters (which are all stunningly designed) are all loveable despite how fucked up they are, and the way the show approaches their interactions with each other is golden. I look forward to seeing the characters develop and seeing their backstories revealed every week. However, Penguindrum really is more of a plot-driven show, and some of the characters behave in ways that are a little unsavory and uncomfortable to watch--until it is explained by later episodes, that is.

All in all, though it can get pretty heavy and philosophical, Mawaru Penguindrum keeps it pleasant to watch with its pleasing visuals and cute penguins. Every plot twist will keep you aching for the next episode. It's getting close to the finish, and I feel like even if the ending falls flat on its face (as it is typical for a lot of anime to do), I will still have immensely enjoyed the ride. It is the first show I've watched in a long time that really stretches the anime medium and turns it into artful storytelling.
