Preliminary (3/12 eps)
Imagine, one fine day in spring, birds chirping, cherry petals swaying, somewhere a murder of mules melodiously braying, and you are hungry. So you divine to acquaint yourself with that fresh little restaurant across the station. As your feet carry you there, and the waiter leads to a comfortable seat, you settle with the order of the chef's special for the day. Not even fifteen minutes pass before it is, rather, they are brought before you, one by one. While you satisfy the glutton within with the meal, you're charmed by the quality. Having finished your dinner, it suddenly grabs your mind whether the food would have been as good if it was only that saucy red dish, or maybe something similar, rather than all of the dishes.

This Anime, rather the Light Novel is that thought brought to life. Is it worth it by itself? Let's find out.

Plot: If by chance Konosuba was your bowl of ale, then dear reader, this is a must try for you. This is more or less an origin story of Megumin and Yunyun, as well as a peek into the lives of the crazy clan known as the crimson demons. How they live on a daily basis, what quirky things they do, and how do they act when something happens is the focus of the story. To put it mildly it is very hilarious.

Let me give you a brief example. What do you think an young mage is taught, on their first day, about the true purpose of magic.
Helping others?
Heh, boring!
Building Society?
Lol, what are you Bob the Builder!
Fighting wars?
And mess your perfectly set hair!
Adventure?
Really, running out of ideas much!
Then what, pray tell is the purpose?
Simple, a true, tried, tested, and proven method of the crimson demon clan, TO LOOK COOL!

Though, surprisingly there is also a bit of drama nicely bundled in with all the shenanigans. The true strength of any story lies in the balance between when and how to give something, and how much. Only laughter will make you numb to it, carefully add a little drama, like sauce to pasta, and you have a recipe for success.

Characters: Let's leave aside Megumin and Yunyun for the moment. The cast introduced merely in the very first episode is already brimming with hilariousness. Megumin's family is a case study in itself. Little Komekko will eat anything that moves, even if it's a furry feline, Papa Hyoizaburo is a skit by himself, and Mama Yuiyui is if Rias Gremory and Mai Sakurajima were born of a single mother.

Then there are the classmates and teachers of Yunyun and Megumin. Every single one of them is a treasure, too precious for the world.

For instance take Arue, she could be as passive and stoic as a rock in front of imminent danger, and then casually say NTR the moment a friend so much as talk to someone else.

Take Pucchin as well, who looks as cool as a cross between a cowboy and a samurai, and then goes on to act as chuuni as middle aged Cid Kagenou.

And this is just two out of at least twenty such goofballs.

Animation: To be honest, the first few minutes really caught me off guard with how good it was. It is better than one would expect, and certainly an improvement on the series overall. The scenes look very crisp and clear, the backgrounds look very expressive, the movement looks seamless, there is nice flow to them, the bright color palette and lighting adds more life to the animation, and even the low budget meme faces look hilarious as someone mentioned in a forum post. All the praises for Studio Drive and the team animating it.

Music: The music very comfortably matches the scenes, elevating their impact on screen. Whether the comic or dramatic, or both, the music always sets the tone for the animation. It shouldn't be a surprise since the same man is in-charge who was of parent series. Special appreciation for the Opening and the ending theme, very reminiscent of the first Konosuba Opening.

Voice Acting: Absolutely top notch. The voices fit the new characters very smoothly. You can almost tell they are having a lot of fun voicing the characters.

Enjoyment: It's Konosuba, of course it is entertaining. There's no way you're not entertained watching this. Even if it's not to your taste, chances are still it'll eek atleast a brief giggle from you. That's saying something.
