On top of that the worldbuilding which is always described as being so great is just ... it's a video game. They go progressively deeper in a hole finding magic items and encountering various monsters and essentially NPCs. It's not that unique or interesting. Just play Etrian Odyssey III. The story is also not that great. Lots of heavy-handed emotional manipulation involving characters you really haven't given me much of a reason to care for since their personalities are pretty thin tbqh. Riko is your typical tries hard shonen protag who has a mission she will not be deterred from at any cost!!! Yeah, it's boring. Emotional or "fucked up" or "twisted" scenes don't work if you haven't made me care at all if your characters live or die.
