It's amazing how they go through each protagonist letting us know where they come from, what are their goals and what makes them still alive. The main goal of the anime is to walk you through a world in constant war , a world without alliances a world where your future is determined by your colour & your family origin.
Talking now about the main character he's one cold, lost & scared guy who has an empty soul searching a reason to still alive, you'll be able to see how he evolves into someone with a meaning in his world & someone who doesn't have to look behind to remember the bad times he had.
To close, it's important to talk about the final, being honest it's a good one but it could have been better, while I believe it's because the possibility of a second season they should have forewarned themselves more in the last episode because they have left a hole that needs to be filled with the manga.
