The character grows from each experience, although a few of the villain's are your typical over confidant type; It's to be expected in the martial arts type of anime.
I personally don't have an issue with the main character to be honest.
From the few Martial Art's anime I have watched (meaning the Chinese one's), the main characters are sometimes given special powers or know certain things. I love characters that struggle & earn their worth, specially when it doesn't break the flow or the way the world works.
