I honestly have nothing to say that hasn't been said a million times. One Piece is a master work of world-building, story-telling and character development. It has a lot of moving pieces that are always moving but you don't get to see them move directly yourself, only take peeks at the turning world as everything is happening making it feel alive and as if there are still things to be seen unlike other anime which solely sets up for the one arc to lead into the next or others that only set upt for the on-going arc and leave everything else to be decided as it progresses. Is some of it made up on the spot just because he saw a gap where he could probably introduce a new element to the story? Probably. But with a manga as old as this(And was meant to be much shorter) then you kind of have to expect that. But Oda does such a good job masking the fact he didn't intend for One Piece to be going on for this long that you could never tell by the way the story is structured.
This doesn't count as a spoiler but I've known people who consider the basic plot of something like "Luffy wants to be pirate king" a spoiler so I'll hide it for the ultra sensitive types anyway. [spoiler] Yeah ,there's an argument that's constantly brought up that too many people have tragic backstories but that's up to you to decide if it's a problem. Some of it is very much necessary where other times aren't that big of a deal and could go either way. This is all for your tastes to decide if it's a problem.[/spoiler]
