BL Metamorphosis is a refreshingly unique story that manages to accomplish a lot, but ultimately leaves a bit to be desired in terms of plot towards the end. The concept is a genuinely interesting one, and some themes that you don't normally see in manga (like the daily life of an elderly widowed woman, what it would be like to get into BL at an old age, etc.) are explored in a realistic and relatable way. The characters in the story are excellently written and very believable throughout, this is aided by some simple but stellar artwork that fits the character of the story perfectly. The way that small sections of fictional BL books that the characters read are included in the story was engaging and added another layer of depth to the work. Ultimately, the last two volumes feel like a rushed ending for a story that should've been twice as long. The ending isn't by any means horrible, but there was just so much more that could've been explored that would've added to the overall quality of the series.

Even if you're not a BL fan, I still think there's a lot of enjoyment to be had here, and with only a 5 volume run, it's not a big commitment for such a unique and interesting story. Not a masterpiece, but well worth the read!
