The original appeal of the series feels like it was cut out, and all we're left with is a watered down action anime that never really ties up or reconciles its overarching narrative of the world coming to an end. If everyone is still filled with despair how does hope win in the end? I know the main theme of the series is reaching for hope despite an uncertain and scary future, but that doesn't excuse not writing a proper conclusion to your story.
