For people who are new to Evangelion, this movie can be extremely good. The music, the art, voice acting are all done with a high taste. Characters are iconic with distinguished personalities. However, new viewers will note that the movie has not much of a story to tell. It feels like an introduction to the series. Thankfully, all the movies are out now and you can binge through them.
As for viewers who have already seen Evangelion anime/manga, the movie is still a good experience to have. There are unexpected plot surprises and the dialogue has improved much more. Shinji expresses more emotions and reflects more on situations, which is opposite to the dull Shinji we had in the early episodes of the original series. However, I still believe there is potential for more improvements. Hence, I give this movie a solid 8 out of 10.
