Mieruko-chan is great so far. As a fan of both horror and the Slice of Life genre, this series depicting the mundanity of everyday life spliced with the unearthly experiences of wandering creatures on earth gives a sense of personal connection to the reader.
For the every day person, who may have had meta-sensory experiences in areas as dark places, or places with creepy atmospheres, that have ever invoked that seemingly irrational but heavy "gut feeling" in them, the reader who relates can rationalize those experiences with the creatures depicted in this manga as spirits who could be roaming on earth, all unseen by the every day person's naked eyes.
For those who claim to be "mystics" here on earth, practicing meditations or rituals to achieve mystical experiences as with tarot or ancient practices, this manga may be a refreshing reminder of their journey practicing such rituals in the modern setting.
But in the manga itself, the story feels slow in its progression, as it leeways often to novelty rather than its focus on the plot. But this novelty still remains enjoyable and relate to the essence of the manga's focus: on the creatures roaming around the world, unseeable to the normal person's eyes.
The art of the creatures are perfect with their grotesque but real features, the main characters of the story in their design and personalities are memorable.
I'm very excited for its anime adaptation, with how the creators will incorporate sounds and color to enhance this manga's impact on these creatures and this meta-sensory experience.
