Have you ever read a book, or watched a show, that changed the scale of every other piece of media? Like it fried your chemical receptors so much that everything else is second class? For me, that's what Adachi to Shimamura is.

This series of light novels follows Sakura Adachi, and Hougetsu Shimamura as they interact in their high school years. Yes, it's a Shoujo Ai romance, and that is indeed the main topic.

However, there are so many more themes and character interactions that make it feel like so much more. Many of these interactions are flush with melancholy, apathy, sloth, and... wait, that doesn't at all sound like a Romance, what the hell is this? Well, let me explain.

The way that I see it, is this was written to be a more realistic approach to romance and Shoujo Ai. And holy jesus did the author knock it out of the park.

The fact that this story has conversations that start and end with almost no content, may seem boring or lackluster to some. To me, this is what actually gives it life. People are not all 'happy go lucky' types or 'assholes with a golden heart' that you find in most Romances. (or all manga for that matter)

The characters are so incredibly well written in this melancholic way, that I can actually feel alongside them. Why? Because they are written like real people, that have real interactions, in real life.

This is what makes this novel so enthralling and breeds such an intense connection with me.

I, therefore, recommend this piece of literature to anyone who can read. This truly is my favorite piece of writing, ever.

Side notes:

The overwhelming sensation of lust and codependency that Adachi feels throughout most of this story is also portrayed very well. The pure insanity that is written into her words and actions is truly mesmerizing. The literal 6-page mania-filled wall of text that this girl spits out at one point should give you an idea of how intense her emotions can be.

The pacing is very much stop-and-go. It gives you such a rush of emotion and overwhelming stimulation... And then the pair separate and its like a wave of stillness comes over you.
