Normally, I'm not a big fan of series with a female lead. But that doesn't necessarily mean that I haven't watched any. Majo No Tabitabi is one of the series that I've watched that has a female lead, and it was very good despite its subpar plot.
Majo No Tabitabi takes place in a fantasy world where there are 3 different levels of mages. There are the novices which can only use basic magic, the apprentice witches which are the underlings or disciples of the witches, and the witches, which are the highest level of mages and can use all kinds of magic. Now, this isn't that original, seeing as a lot of other series have premises very similar to this. But Majo No Tabitabi executes this unoriginal premise excellently, and it makes for a breath of fresh air.
I'd like to say the plot is is good, but this is where the series dips in quality and is its biggest flaw. Judging of of the premise, I didn't expect this series to have that original of a plot either. I'll say this. Sure, the series has a plot that could be considered original, but that doesn't mean that it's good. The plot for this series is very bland. So we have our main character, Elaina, who grows up reading a lot of books. Out of all the books she read, her favorite one was the adventures of Nike, a famous witch who traveled the world with no real goal in mind, only to see what was out there. This inspires Elaina to become a witch when she grows up and do the same thing that Nike did: travel the world. After growing up, she becomes an apprentice witch and becomes the disciple of the Stardust Witch, another famous witch. Elaina learns from her and eventually becomes a witch, the highest level of the mages. After acquiring her brooch, the thing that signifies that she is a witch, she sets out to travel the world. This plot is not good. The problem is that there almost is no plot. The main story is this series biggest flaw. There is no plot, and the series suffers from it.
Now to the characters. The characters are pretty good. We have our main character, Elaina, who seems nice but can be really sadistic sometimes. I like this because she's not just another generic nice girl with no other character, and I really like this. I like to compare her to Maika from Blend S, but while Maika can't control her sadistic nature, Elaina can and she uses it to her advantage sometimes. Then there's Saya, who we meet in the second episode after she crashes into Elaina while flying. She doesn't bring that many new traits to the table and ends up being one of those "i blame everything on myself and i apologize about a quadrillion times" characters. (Sorry if that was a bad metaphor.) Anyway, she's not very imaginative and ends up being a character who we've seen in countless other series. I would go over all the other characters, but they're all pretty good. I'll just say that.
Well, I'm lazy and I don't want to write anymore so this is the end of my review. I recommend this series to anyone looking for an adventure anime. I enjoyed this series and i hope anyone who reads this review and decides to watch it will too.
