If you are a die-hard fan of the type-moon visual novels, I'm sure this movie has something for you. If, however, you have not played through the VN, it will likely leave you confused as to how anybody could possibly sift through the piles of pseudo-intellectual masturbatory ramblings to find the plot. Character motivations are inconsistent and at times non-existent, and not a single one of them is likable. Why did this character do this thing? You won't know but they'll damn sure wax philosophical about it for five to ten minutes, leaving you with more questions than when they started.

In the end, ufotable's stellar animation and admittedly high-tier sound design can't save this film from a soap opera plot based around toxic relationships and unsympathetic teenagers.
