first time reviewing something here on mal, so i decided to start with this, something everyone seemed to love, so here we go, around 2 years ago i got back into anime, was really enjoying these new shows after some time i realized there was this sub-genre where people get sucked into different worlds like in tron called 'isekai',

i decided to watch all of the top stuff since its really popular, watched konosuba, rezero, log horizon and basically the actually good ones of this genre and was really looking forward to watching overlord where the mc is a villain and has some of the renowned worldbuilding out there! or so i thought

the anime starts off with momonga or ainz getting trapped in this virtual world because he just happened to be logged in, not the worst getting-sucked-in-to-another-world reveal or whatever you wanna call it and everything after that is simply the most generic and mediocre shit you'll see, so basically he has these floor guardians who are basically a bunch of op servants who are very, VERY loyal to this guy, i mean thats all there is to their character, 3/4 of their dialogue, INCLUDING ones they have with each other consists of them praising their skeleton daddy as if it wasnt as clear as day after the first few episodes

one thing people often say when defending this show is that the character designs are amazing, sure but thats pretty much it m8, if a character is dependent on their design and not overall personality the fuck's even the point lmao the other thing about its art is that something i came to know only a little while before writing this review, MADHOUSE was the studio behind it, yup thats right the one behind one punch man and hunter x hunter, and this was probably the most low budget shit they ever made ngl, from bad looking cgi to the main characters mouth not moving an inch cause hes a skeleton xD

the other thing is that if someone were to shit on the terrible animation (at least in madhouse's standards), they quite often say that this isnt supposed to be an action heavy series and its about the worldbuilidng, ok but where?? sure they explore the world and kill this random bad guy because his friend saved him back when he was just a little skeleton in rags getting bullied on vr like a little bitch and that saving someone in need is common sense or something, wish he remembered that later in the series, alright back to "worldbuilding" im just gonna say i watched this over a year ago and yeah i watched all 3 seasons because my young developing weeabo mind thought that "i shouldnt judge a series off just the first season! im gonna stick until the very end!1" and i dont remember all of it maybe because it was so fucking boring but what i do remember is: there's no point of any worldbuilding after he got the gist of whats going around there, he doesnt have any well thought out plans in conquering this world, he does this simply by his power, which would make sense in reality but what the fuck is entertaining in that? if he can take care of absolutely anything in this world by his raw strength so why even dragging this shit off for 2 more seasons?

sure there're way more shows where the mc takes care of everything simply his strength, much like the aforementioned one punch man, but opm handles this very well, not simply by one-shotting potential threats but it creates tension and explains how grave the situation is before eventually it being taken care of by saitama but even then, they manage to deliver it in either a really comedic or a really badass way, being entertaining to the audience till the very end. those kinds of things are what overlord lacks, it doesnt have worldbuilding, a good action scene or two, no personality in any of the characters and it still has 8.01 on mal, why? because friends there's no god

if you have enjoyed this first season in any way and is still going to watch the rest, who am i to stop you? this show was all over the place and it had no idea what it wanted to do, (much like this review gomen nasai senpai this is my first time uwu), like i said i watched all the seasons and trust me when i tell to you there was little to nothing going on, i do not recommend watching this in any way, if you're interested in this genre and want stuff with good worldbuilding i heavily suggest watching log horizon or even that time i got reincarnated as a slime, lh is an underrated piece with far superior worldbuilding and same with slime but you've probably at least heard of it, so go watch those if you were disappointed by this series as much as i was

overall, i think the only kind of people who'd enjoy this are those who have a power fantasy and gets their dick wet for something like having loyal slaves and shit like that, i know a lot of those unfortunately, again if you did like this, be my guest go watch the rest of the series and if you didnt i think we could be friends

aight, i'll wrap up now, was pretty fun finally getting this out, sorry if this review was all over the place, looking forward to make more of these, hopefully next one would be a rather positive one
