If I had to compare Hourou Musuko to anything or anyone, I'd be a wine -- bitter, complex, unique. Two things I think could have been done differently is the artwork and the storytelling.
Though the story is ingrained in reality, the artwork is vague and dream-like, a style that would better be used for more escapist animes. Animation like ToraDora would suit the Hourou Musuko more because of ToraDora's attention to shadows and detail, which would thus further ingrain a realistic nature in Hourou Musuko.
Telling this story from when they entered middle school is a difficult task, and only a master could help newcomers catch on with the story from there. This show did it's best to welcome the newcomer, but did not succeed completely because of a fast-paced beginning.
Hourou Musuko's story is amazing as it is deeply character-driven, and that each character has special attributes. It's themes of insecurity, growing up, and inner pain is something escapists will absolutely hate (bitter) and what analysts will find interesting (complex). But what all notice from its bitter complexities is that Hourou Musuko is unique, a wine ready to be smelt and sipped. Mature as the show is, it will appeal to those who yearn for something unforgettable.
I enjoy Hourou Musuko a lot, and I'm always looking forward to the next episode. Cheers
