Overrated and pretentious. Many people whom have watched the series often say how "deep" this anime is and how they cannot understand it- creating a sort of culture that surrounds Evengelion as an effect. Also, "Coming of age stories" are and were nothing new when this anime came out. I recognize that this may have had a strong impact on the anime industry- but I do not care. This anime has been analyzed so heavily- which is a good thing, however the universal adoration of this anime has garnered too much praise for what I personally believe to be themes that more often do not exist in this anime or are exaggerated.
