Darwin's Game is basically a mobile game that highlights one of Charles Darwin’s famous theories: survival of the fittest. Players are pitted against each other till one gives up or dies.
Again, the anime could have been great. The storyline and writing were just so incomplete, inconsistent, had many loopholes, lacked proper build-up, that it became frustrating to watch.
For example, there is a difference between a character being stubborn or making stupid choices and just plain bad writing. Characters are people and people make mistakes. However, for a character to do something inexplicably or without basis, just so there is dialogue or movement in the plot is faulty writing.
In one instance (only semi-spoiler you’ll find in this review), our main character wanted to know something about a certain function of the game, but there was nothing on it. He even texted another character asking about it; she replied that there was no such function. When he meets up with her, she says he can ask her just one question about the game. The MC even has an internal dialogue along the lines of “I’d better choose the question wisely,” then he proceeds to ASK THE SAME QUESTION ABOUT THE SPECIFIC GAME FUNCTION. *sigh* This goes beyond stubbornness and being blockheaded. It was an unnecessary exchange.
The many unique setting elements and personalities could have been utilized. Yes, back stories are great and all, especially when proving the motivation and strength of a character. Then again, when writing is unsound, this goes all for naught.
One thing I can agree with the script about the show, and was quite witty, actually is "did god crap you out and forget to flush?"
