Katanagatari is hard describe without spoiling it; it is a series that works masterfully toward its end.

Built on the back of light comedy and a habit of mocking conventions of epic tales of adventure, even the most simple of phrases and the smallest of events carve out important meanings within its structure. Though truly not witnessed until its conclusion we see these as limitations created by the characters themselves at the very beginning of the series; the small details we pass over as viewers continue to unlock the potential of the series as it unravels.

While trying not to spoil anything, the ending must be discussed, at least vaguely. For a series that built itself of comedy and going against conventions, it concluded in a bizarre torrent of darkness, brutality, and violence that sought only to convey the most comforting of nihilism. You will be shocked and you will be surprised, but you will also be grasped firmly by its conclusion and, after everything has settled, feel entirely at ease.

I recommend not watching it all in one go. The month-to-month pace felt very correct, as each episode corresponds approximately to the passage of one month's time within the series; perhaps watch an episode per week. As only a true masterpiece could, even the rate at which the series is watched has an importance, and is meant to have an effect on the viewer.

A perfect 10 out of 10.
