Ryouga is the far extreme of a shonen protagonist, never backing down from any challenge to the point of the word "impossible" becoming a trigger word for the lad. He never gives up and is kind of stupid, like most shonen protagonists, so he's OK. Not groundbreaking, but not irritating either. Miruto, with only a Braviary that she can't even fly with, takes the roll of Speedwagon and serves as commentary to events in the Manga when the reader doesn't already fully understand. Definitely a lot less annoying than Brock however from how little there is of it.
The story (that I've read) follows a typical shonen story with gradual development with it's characters and a weekly saturday-cartoon evil character for the characters to show off their abilities to each other.
I believe that there is a big selling point for this Manga; the transformations. People can use Burst stones with a Pokemon to shift into a superhero designed after said pokemon. There's a certain awe watching how these people fight each other using pokemon abilities, and mechanics like elemental weaknesses and environmental attacks are all there too to serve the action. My only problem with this being when the Manga came out, it tied close to the release of Pokémon Black and White, so all the transformations featured are from pokemon new to those games, so if you were looking for a transformation with Charizard or Pikachu, it's not here sorry.
I personally find this manga incredibly interesting, being that it's tone and art style are rather different to most mediums of Pokemon. And I'm not entirely sure if having this story is considered canon in the Pokemon universe, but it does add a interesting element to add to it. And the shonen art style serves as an enjoyable read overall.
