I almost skipped right over Cop Craft (CC) due to the poster picture (at the time a loli in skimpy clothes and an older dude with a gun – lame!), but the synopsis was enough for me to give the first episode a chance. And I am glad it did that, I almost missed one of the best shows this season, because CC is without a doubt the underdog of the summer 2019 season. CC is the typical show which gets overshadowed by more hyped shows such as Dr. Stone and Enen no Shouboutai, but if given a chance is one of the best contributions this season. Sure, the animation is below average, but what it lacks in visuals it makes up with witty dialogue and character dynamic. Because CC has the best main duo seen in anime in quite a while, and they carry the show brilliantly. So, let me break it down to you why you should give this underdog the chance it deserves.

CC is basically a classical buddy cop show with the setting in American inspired city called San Teresa. The vibe is dirty and gritty, showing much of a large city´s most depraved corners with prostitution, drugs and other illegal activities. It has a nice twist though – 15 years ago a gate to another world opened and now humans and aliens co-exist in this city of sins. Kei Matoba is your classical rough and handsome chain-smoking detective, who solve crimes his own way in the city of sins. After his human partner is killed in a drug bust, Kei is paired up with the alien Tilarna, who is a noble from beyond the gate to solve the case. At first, they don´t get along at all. Kei has a hostile attitude and preconceptions towards aliens and Tilarna has a condescending approach towards Kei. But after working together for a while, the two starts to grow a mutual respect and like for each other.

You don´t watch CC for some new and ground-breaking story, or great animation – you watch it for the dialogue and dynamic between the characters, and most for the dynamic between Kei and Tilarna, it´s witty, and both function as way to further the plot and to develop them as characters. CC is an easy entertaining show, with no deep messages beyond the usual mixing of races problematics. Which was very enjoyable, it didn´t try to be more than it was and did what it supposed to do without fail. It delivered the 2-3-episode cases with some nice character development and character interaction without railing of track and try to do more complicated stuff.

CC biggest short coming is without a doubt the animation. If you heard about the studio Millepensee before its probably because they are the studio behind the Berserk sequel attempt. Yeah, the Berserk that got famous for the absolutely horrendous use of CGI. Luckily, the CGI isn´t that terrible in CC, but now we know why they used so much in Berserk. The regular animation is certainly below average, and the is most noticeable in the action scenes which practically are still frames. Which is a shame, because the set up for them is great and would have added a nice layer to the story. The colour palette is however fitting for the show, with toned done colours and a lot of scenes in the cover of night.

The soundtrack doesn´t consist of any award-winning pieces either but suits the show and its atmosphere nicely with some bluesy jazz tracks. The VA´s is however great, which performs very well and are matched well with the characters.

With a current score of 6.96 I think CC is a very underrated show in terms of entertaining content. I enjoyed it a lot and is the only show that ended this season besides Demon Slayer that got a score of 8 or above from me. Given an honest chance with the premises it has, it’s a good show that actually has some believable dialogue and delivers what it promises to.
