I walked into this anime the same way most of us have. We were told this anime was incredibly gory. The thing is, they are correct.
This series will be hard for me to review as it has its up and downs at points to where I have to break it down.

Story - 7
I give the story a 7 mainly because I feel there is a "Dual story" going on. At least to me.
The story of what a Diclonius is, and how they became to be, and what is going on now with them. That I was I feel this story should be about. Is it there? Sort of. This plot peaks it head out of the ground every so often just to duck back down.
While the other story, is the story of your main character Kohta, and his back history with certain characters. They dwell in this one too much. There are several questions still left unanswered by the end of the series.
While I would have preferred to see more about the Diclonius, I am just nitpicking at that idea. The overall story they focus on isn't that bad. Its good.

Art - 10
The put tons of effort into making the scenery. They are gorgeous. While the animation is pretty impressive too. With the heaps of gore in here they do a real good job at showing it. This isn't "Blood sprays there, and there" this is "Tub of blood here, disembodied limbs all over here, and yes... another tub of blood".
All very detailed. Not a complaint, unless you are queasy with gore.

Sound - 7
I knock the score down mainly for the voice acting (Dubs). The dubs are not that great. With a few good voice actors, the rest is kind of shotty, nothing to really annoy you, but its noticeable.

Characters - 5
Ah ha! The weak point in the series.
While they do cover character backgrounds in here, this is the majority of the series. Flash backs after flash backs. Not a bad thing.
However the problem with this is that everyone in the show just "happens" to know each other from a long time ago, and just happens to meet up again. Why? Because the writer said so! Nothing seems believable. Seems very rushed. Although the series is only 13 episodes, so they had to make due with the time they had.
I have a few notes that I feel I should mention. The character Lucy is one of them. She is a Diclonius. She has cat ears--erm... Horns, coming out of her head to show this. However she basically can't talk due to certain events early on, and is forced saying "Nyuu". While some people find this cute, many may find this annoying. I personally didn't care.
The second note I will make is if you are offended by the suggesting of "child molestation" stay away from this anime. While it is VERY VERY strongly pointed out at one of the characters back histories as being molested as a child. It is NOT, I repeat, NOT shown at all in the series. It is just strongly suggested to. While it did make me feel sick about the whole concept, its only mentioned once.

Over all. While I did enjoy the overall story they focused on. I personally would have liked to seem more about the Diclonius themselves, but again, that is just me nitpicking.
The major problem with the series is the characters. Nothing seemed believable through the characters, and to have bad dub actors to throw in the mix made them even worse. Then again, it is only 13 episodes, they had to do something with in that time. Do I recommend the series? No. This one is one you will have to interest yourself into. With how twisted this series really is, and the ups and downs it has, it is something you have to interest yourself into.
