This movie didn't go how I expected it to go; I didn't expect the setting to be a steampunk alternative WWII, I didn't expect it to be more kid-friendly, and I definitely didn't expect the pirates to steal the show.
For Studio Ghibli's first animated film, it really set the standard they were going for; beautifully detailed animation, and focus on the characters and (to a lesser extent, but not to be discounted) the worldbuilding. It's a pretty good and enjoyable movie that had some really good moments, from soft character-building scenes, to solid action-heavy scenes full of tension. A solid start for one of the greatest animation studios of all time.
