Mixed Feelings
While this anime had a captivating set-up and concept, I found that it quickly fell flat. My general feelings about Elfen Lied were that it was very cliche and overdone--keep reading or if you don't want spoilers I just about summed it up right there.

The story starts out well--it sounds like a great thriller with the whole science experiment gone wrong plot. But after the first couple episodes, it kinda falters from there...Childhood romance, unrequieted father-daughter love, the science experiment coming to terms with its humanity... Yes, the first couple minutes was disturbing the way that Lucy single handedly takes out all of the security in the facility, however, once you've seen one death in the series, you've seen them all. There's no "creativity" to the deaths after that, just a quick "blow to the neck", which gets really old after a while and just plain gruesome to watch.

I wasn't a fan of the art--it just didn't seem very well done. Eyes were kind of all over the place, and battle scenes could have been a lot more interesting if the movements had been more fluid--instead they were stick like. The characters were also common archetypes--the hero caught in between two loves, the naive killer, the helpless childhood friend..The only character that I felt a mild attachment to was Mya, who was given a more original backstory; albeit a much more sad and somewhat series inappropriate one.

Overall, I was excited when I started watching this series, but quickly became bored and forced myself to finish it just to say that I had. I won't lie, though--it does have its moments that are unpredictable and pull at your heartstrings--such as Lucy's backstory with her classmates and when the really strong experiment was first released. But somehow, the effects are blunted with the constant fanservice shots that get really annoying really quick...
Overall this series isn't a complete waste of time--I did manage to finish it after all. I just didn't find it as enjoyable as it was set up to be.
